The Beginning of a Fruitful Professional Life

Founded in 2019, AMTD Digital is a Hong Kong-based digital media company, and it is a subsidiary of AMTD Group Ltd. In the beginning, there was a goal to build a firm that people could put their faith in, and that's exactly what happened.

AMTD Digital's founder is Dr. Calvin Choi. He attended the University of Oxford, where he attained a degree in Transformational Leadership, and he became a Senior Executive Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School. At the University of Waterloo in Canada, Calvin has been given an honorary causa degree - Doctor of Laws.

Having worked in the investment banking industry for more than 15 years, Calvin has a deep understanding of the global capital markets.

AMTD's CEO was formerly a managing director of the investment banking business of UBS AG. At Citigroup's investment banking division, he served as China's Chief Specialist and Head of the China Strategic Alliance unit. He was previously an Executive Director at Citigroup.

In the stock and financial markets, as well as in cross-border mergers and acquisitions and financing transactions, Calvin has led several large-scale and respected capital market operations.

The Institutional Investor magazine named Kalvin as one of the "Fintech Finance 35" in 2016. The World Economic Forum recognized him as a Young Global Leader in March 2017.

Additionally, Calvin is very involved in his community, serving as Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Youth Association since February 2014 and as Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Professions since the beginning of 2017. He is also a board member of One Child's non-profit organization, which fights against children’s sexual exploitation.

Before Calvin took over operations at AMTD Group in 2016, the company ran at a reasonably small operation scale. He then successfully guided the business through a period of turmoil, growing it from a ‘gecko’ to a full-grown ‘dragon.' This, in turn, proved his competence and earned him the trust of his team and numerous investors.

Calvin greatly expanded the company’s portfolio. Besides the usual fin-tech services it provided before his arrival, Calvin introduced services such as managing assets, insurtech, private education, investment banking, strategic investment, hotels, and digital banking.

Calvin felt grateful for his success and founded the AMTD Charity Foundation in late 2016. Digital solutions with a collaborative overlay are what this organization strives to provide its customers. Through this platform, Calvin wanted to give back to himself and the international society. The foundation actively supports those in need, helping to relieve poverty and aiding in human rights, anti-corruption, labor, and the environment.

In the first year of AMTD Digital’s operation, the company had total revenue of $1,8 million, which isn’t bad for a brand new firm with a dozen employees. They operated at a loss of about $300 thousand.

But Calvin didn’t sulk. He pushed through, and AMDT Digital reported total revenue of roughly $21 million, with an operating profit of $18 million in 2020.

The company’s total revenue was approximately $19 million for 2021. AMTD Digital had 58.6 million dollars in cash and $320 million in total liabilities on January 31, 2021. The company's free cash flow for the year ending January 31, 2021, was $12.5 million.

To help fuel the need for expansion, AMTD Digital filed for an IPO in 2021. About 40% of the IPO funds were earmarked for future licensing applications, IT infrastructure, human resource needs, and acquisitions. Approximately 40% for company development and growth, and the rest for general corporate reasons.

AMTD Digital’s IPO market capitalization stands at $1,38 billion, and for the year ending January 31, 2021, free cash flow was $12.5 million.

As for the company’s plans, Calvin announced that they are planning on expanding in the promising new world - the Metaverse.
