Yotpo: The Loveable Brand

Yotpo

Isn't it true that, whenever someone comes bearing a great tip, we always tend to listen?

On one hand, useful information keeps us engaged and arouses our curiosity.

On the other, it all depends on the source itself - the more thought-provoking, the better. The same curious thing happens with user-generated reviews and content online.

These days, we all realize that online customer reviews are one of the first indicators of product quality, and a desirable concept potential buyers peruse when making a purchase.

Let's make something clear right off the bat - no one does quality quite like Tomer Targin.

Making every buyer's mission far easier and much simpler, Timer Targin invented Yotpo: a platform revolutionizing the face of e-commerce for days to come.

And how exactly did he do that?

Read on to find out:

Call Him the Game Changer

Tomer Tagrin has always been a risk-taker and a pure visionary.

Born in Israel, he spent most of his childhood staring at his computer, gaming, doing intriguing research, and looking for inspiration to catch his eye.

In an attempt to become a master of technology, computers, and the Internet as a whole, Tomer had become very passionate about those subjects, spending his time digging deeper into the unknown world of computer science, which undoubtedly sharpened his mind.

Before Tomer went to college, he had enrolled in the Artillery forces, where he served as team leader in the Israeli Defense Forces for two years - from 2004 to 2006.

While at it, Tomer commanded between 10 and 30 people and specialized in training the next generation of Israeli artillery commanders.

This experience was a life-changer for Tomer, who now grew stronger, wiser and better.

The adventure also influenced his motivational side, which helped him walk down the road to success.

Following his experience within the Israel Defence Force, Tomer attended college at a University in Tel Aviv from 2008 until 2011, finally acquiring his BSc in Software Engineering.

While still at college, Tomer decided to work so he could earn some cash, gain enough experience, and explore his full capacity, all the while doing the only thing that fulfilled him - exploring the tech world, computing, and excelling at informatics.

So, Tomer started working at Ikick, a company that imported the Chinese game 'Jianzi' to Israel - and soon, he was managing the entire operation as one of the brand's co-founders.

His next job, Chip Design Developer at Intel, included developing aspects of logic analysis as part of a logic design team.

Then, one day, Tomer came across something he couldn't overlook.

How Everything Started

Throughout college, Tomer was a rebellious fellow with a great sense of individuality. One day at school, Tomer met his future BFF, business partner, and today's co-founder of Yotpo. Without either of them realizing it, the game had forever changed.

Tomer met Omri at a time both were after a dual degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Omri was the smart kid in the front row, taking notes, whereas Tomer was a troublemaker at heart, and a prankster while at it. One day, Tomer got Omri so distracted in class, that he turned around and plain told him:

'Can you please shut up, I'm trying to learn here!'

That was it.

This was the moment Tomer was floored for the first time - and from one of his own, too!

Eager to learn from the guy, Timer befriended Omri, and soon - a friendship was born.

Before you know it, the two friends did everything together: sharing the same passion for computers, showing each other mutual respect, and working harder than ever at succeeding.

The initial idea for Yotpo came to the twosome thanks to a bad online shopping experience.

After purchasing a camera online, as a layman nonetheless, Tomer heavily relied on favourable reviews. He found his perfect camera right after, and it was all thanks to one-hundred-plus, five-star reviews. When the camera arrived, however, Tomer was certain they had sent him the wrong one, as the thing could barely focus!

Tomer didn't find the camera at fault at all, but the reviews. After all, they were fake!

This is exactly what inspired both Tomer and Omri to dig deeper into product reviews.

The first step there? Eliminate fake reviews at once.

The second step there? Ensure the reviews' trustworthiness and authenticity.

Once on a roll, Tomer and Omri realized that, far from its marketing potential, integrating fair reviews in social media was also a key string to pull - so they got to it.

First Investors and Launching

In the beginning, Tomer and Omri met with an array of potential players and investors.

Basically, they reached out to anyone with $10K in the bank and a working phone number. They tried to pitch figures who never ever took to investing in tech, nor they ever would.

Luckily, the startup scene in Israel was pretty tight at the time.

Out of all fruits, one felt particularly ripe, so one thing led to another, and before you know it - the duo met a few angels, excited or silly enough to put money into the fictive platform Tomer and Omri showcases - Yotpo!

The Israeli community was close-knit, and soon enough, they got in touch with a range of Israeli and US angels.

Tomer and Omri were big believers in getting to know their investors very well before they became part of their platform, so their interactive ways were certainly worth their while.

The Yotpo team knew Adam Fisher, from BVP (who led one round), for almost 4 years before they even started pitching to Bessemer.

The same goes for all of the other investors like Innovation Endeavors, Marker LLC, Vintage Investment Partners, Blumberg Capital, Access Industries, so Tomer and Omri got to know them as people as well as investors.

All geared up and ready to fire, the two put the idea into motion and aimed to finesse the platform, ultimately succeeding in 2011, when Yotpo saw the market life of day!

What is Yotpo Exactly?

The Israeli duo showcased something really different and meaningful for its people.

That's one of the main reasons why Yotpo became what it is today - a leading platform in comprehensive tools for collecting and leveraging user-generated content, like customer reviews, photos, and else!
